Second Grade Curriculum

Reading-
Second Graders have 90 minutes of reading each focusing on four components: phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Our phonics program follows the 95% Group continuum. The skills we work on in class and during our Walk-To-Intervention are short vowels, blends, digraphs, silent e, predictable vowel teams, unpredictable vowel teams, r controlled vowels and complex consonants. Our WOW words focus on one skill each week. The goal for second graders in fluency is 90 words per minute. We are continually monitoring the students to make sure they are able to meet that goal by the end of the year. In vocabulary, we are using Elements of Reading in addition to the Harcourt story words. We read a new story every week from our Harcourt series. We have a focus skill that we use as we read the stories. Most of the stories are AR and we encourage each student to take an AR test, which tests comprehension.

Writing- Second Grade writing consists of a program called WEX. WEX addresses each skill in succession so teachers and students are always aware of the goals of instruction. Direct instruction on a particular skill is followed up with multiple opportunities for students to practice using that skill in writing.

Math- This is our third year using GO MATH in Seminole County. Each child was sent home with their login information on the inside cover of their planner. (https://www-k6.thinkcentral.com/ePC/start.do) There are three big ideas that are covered in second grade. Big Idea one develops an understanding of base-ten numerations and place value concepts. Big Idea two develops quick recall of addition facts and related subtraction facts and fluency with multi-digit addition and subtraction. Big Idea three develops an understanding of linear measurement and facility in measuring lengths.

Science- Last year we  adopted a new science book with an online component, we will continue with the same text this year. Each child was sent home with their login information on the inside cover of their planner. (https://www-k6.thinkcentral.com/ePC/start.do) Science concepts are divided into four Bodies of Knowledge. These are the Nature of Science, Earth and Space Science, Life Science and Physical Science. Second grade has ten specific Big Ideas that each student must master. They are as follows:

1. The Practice of Science - Big Idea 1
2. Earth's Structures - Big idea 6
3. Earth's Systems and Patterns - Big Idea 7
4. Properties of Matter - Big Idea 8
5. Change in Matter - Big Idea 9
6. Forms of Energy - Big Idea 10
7. Forces and Changes in Motion - Big Idea 13
8. Organization and Developing of Living Organisms - Big Idea 14
9. Heredity and Reproduction - Big Idea 16
