All instruction at Lake Orienta is based on the Seminole County Curriculum Plans that are provided to each grade level. These determine what is taught at each grade level and outlines materials to be used and the timelines for teaching.

Reading Instruction:
Reading instruction is within a 90 minute block consisting of whole group, small group instruction and independent reading time. Instruction is in the six areas of reading: oral language, phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Reading strategies and skills are taught and practiced using Scott Foresman's Reading Street series, Heineman Comprehension ToolKit along with Time for Kids Non-Fiction, supplemental literature and novel studies. Vocabulary is developed and enriched through the use of Elements of Reading: Vocabulary.

Intervention/Acceleration Block:

Each grade level has a designated 30 minute block of time where students may be grouped for necessary skill instruction or enrichment activities based on meeting their individual needs and strengths.

Reading Assessment:

Reading is assessed regularly, with numerous tools, to measure student growth and individual needs. Some of the assessments used are:

Oral reading fluency passages – six times a year

Discovery Education Reading Assessment –computer based district assessment

SRI – Scholastic Reading Inventory – computer based assessment

Mathematics Instruction:

Math Instruction is presented in both whole and small group settings using the Go Math series. Chapters are organized within the three Big Ideas and include their Supporting Ideas as identified at every grade level. Hands-on manipulatives, Grab and Go Centers, and technology are integrated throughout each lesson. Parents may access the electronic textbook and resources on the ThinkCentral website with their student’s ID number and password.

Mathematics Intervention/Acceleration:

Math intervention takes place within the classroom using the Go-Math materials.  Intervention is provided according to the students’ specific needs through the use of Reteaching, Strategic, and Intensive materials. Soar to Success is the electronic tool that also supports and supplements the student’s instruction.  For fourth and fifth grade we offer PRIMES, which is an advanced placement math program in addition to the regular curriculum.

Mathematics Assessment:

Math skills are assessed regularly through the use of classroom quizzes and tests. The Discovery Education Math Assessment is also administered 3-4 times a year to monitor students progress at each grade level.
